UK foreign office advice is not to travel which invalidates my insurance and other websites are telling people already there to stay indoors. First stop Pupu springs –the largest freshwater springs in NZ and the clearest in the world. The walkway skirts the ‘lake’ filled with water gushing from marble rock rifts and is surrounded by a replenished forest of manuka and kanuka trees and ferns. The area has become a sought after place to live –lots of splendid houses with beach access and others with views of Golden Bay and Farewell Spit. The BA lounge looked identical to all their others in UK airports –they clearly bulk buy china, furniture and refreshments. The one exception was the direct entry onto the plane which meant I was quickly settled into seat 1K on the 747, filling in my breakfast menu card and choosing a bedtime movie.
